THE LOCAL music scene is alive and kicking and the man who discovered Oasis believes that we have a real shining light right under our noses.
Music business legend Alan McGee, who discovered the Manchester giants, will be at Pivo Pivo in Glasgow next week to launch Coatbridge singer Pete MacLeod’s new single; “Rolling Stone”.
McGee – the founder of Creation Records – thinks Pete is ready to make his mark.
Speaking to the Advertiser he said: “Pete is a rock ‘n’ roll star, the new single is the first sign of greatness. I love the guy and his music, he’s a truly genuine talent and a lovely bloke.
“Pete deserves to be heard and if the world’s fair, and so often it isn’t, then he’ll get the break.”
The Coatbridge singer/songwriter made the decision to donate proceeds from the single to Cancer Research UK after receiving the devastating news while living in America that his dad had been diagnosed with cancer.

Alan McGee hopes that the single release will provide a welcome boost for a worthy cause with the disease affecting so many lives, he continued: “Pete’s a great talent and it’s a great cause – I had a scare myself – it wasn’t cancerous but people should get checked out.”
The outspoken music industry legend admits to having a bee in his bonnet about TV music talent shows, he said: “It is really hard for rock bands and artists these days, the culture around music is different.
“In the world of X Factor the real talents like Pete are getting lost.
“Simon Cowell is objectionable and X Factor is mindless garbage.
“The public deserve X Factor and who am I to tell them not to watch – the public gets what the public wants.”
Despite the X Factor type artists invading the charts, McGee – who also managed the Libertines and Primal Scream – believes there’s still room for homegrown talent in the higher echelons of the music world.
He continued: “I love Glasvegas, I’ve just heard their new album. Nothing else has come along since Oasis – Glasvegas are their natural successors.
“They are building momentum in the right way and I’ve no doubt they could become the biggest band in the world.”
Coatbridge bands; The Vespas and Restless Sinners have the chance to impress the influential music mogul when they fill the support slots for Pete MacLeod at the “Rolling Stone” launch night next Wednesday.
Alan McGee decided to retire from music management in 2008 to concentrate on bringing up his daughter, he reckons the time was right, adding: “I’m now 50-years-old and a dad, life is just what it is, I don’t have to pretend I’m anything other than myself.”
Pete MacLeod will also play King Tut’s on May 27 and could be set for an appearance at this year’s T in the Park.
There are also gigs lined up in Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds.
Radio Scotland’s Janice Forsyth Show has made the single their record of the month and it’s also set to feature in next month’s issue of Q Magazine.
Tickets for the Pivo Pivo launch on Wednesday, February 9 are available from Coatbridge outlets Tommy Tangos, Whifflet Post Office and online.
